a few findings on PGP

  • 1 in 5 women (20%) experience PGP (Virgara et al, 2018)

  • Clinically persistent PGP from postpartum stage to 2 years after childbirth has a reported incidence of 5% to 8.5% (Kanakaris et al, 2011)

  • PGP accounts for up to 72% of sick leave in pregnancy (Malmqvuist et 2015)

  • There is an association between anxiety and depression and PGP (Bakker et al 2013, Van de Pol, 2010)

  • Women with PGP are less mobile in pregnancy than women with no pain and women with back pain only (Van de Pol, 2010)

  • There is a link between PGP and functional disability (Virgara et al 2019)

  • Higher Levels of functional disability in pregnancy are linked with anxiety (Robinson et al 2010)

  • Women with PGP are more likely to catastrophise and avoid activities that they believe will bring more pain (Olsson et al 2009)

  • PGP is associated with sleep deprivation (Dorheim et al 2012)

  • Many women struggle to cope with the pain and find their experience is normalised (Sinclair et al 2014)

  • Women fear PGP returning if they get pregnant again and some say they can’t cope with it again (Wuytack et al, 2015)

  • Many women do not feel supported by midwives (Sinclair et al 2014)

The qualitative research paints a very desperate picture of women in great distress with PGP. I am happy to share those findings with you, if it’s of interest click below.
